This loyalty card illustration is part of an advertising package created for a new café in Birmingham specialising in cupcakes. They produce hand made cupcakes, carefully crafted in their in house kitchen. When asking the client what they wished to be presented in the advertising, they said a strong organic feel, including detailed illustrations, portraying their organic message clearly.

When completing research of the company I experienced the warm, organic and slightly quirky atmosphere in the café, which partnered well with my illustrations. Armed with a box of cupcakes to work from and of course very importantly taste, the project began.

The illustration within the final product was created using watercolour and pen and ink. Using bright but natural colours captured the organic textures to portray an attractive food product.

Repetition of the illustration on the business card is for practical use, where each stamp would land for the customer to receive their reward, as well as communicating the layout and quantity of products in the café. All of the advertising products within for this company are linked using a strong use of colour, layout and unique illustrating style. The logo of the brand was added to the top left hand of the card.

The work needed to target a range of ages and be fun with a strong use of imagery to communicate the artistic perfection they strive to create with their products. It was also important that the work was a form of attractive advertising which any customer would be happy to pick up, keep and show to their family and friends.

“This year, the theme is the River Thames and entries should feature the river as a central feature of London and London life. It is the task of entrants to create an illustration that draws attention to the benefits of the river.”

I wished to create a busy illustration full of energy and different elements. The river Thames being the strong focus on the illustration, through positioning and a use of carefully collaged light paper, which stands out on the brown background. I wished to communicate the energy and variety around the river from buildings to transport, through mark making and colours. On the left hand side of the image the Houses of Parliament stands strong using sharp linier marks and black pen. On the other side of the river a different energy is shown using circular marks and a red pen.

A poster, advertising a new online magazine for London, UK. The magazine consists of the major events and venues going on around the city, a modern, fresh layout letting locals and tourists know the latest news.

I was given the text to include on the poster and told to create an energetic illustration with many places in London included. My sketchbook was filled with drawings of the sights, using a fine black pen.

I wished to produce a sketchy feel to these using a range of mark making to indicate the speed of the new events added to the online magazine and the energy, variety of places to see and things to do in London. These sketches were then scanned onto the computer and I incorporated the images and produced a layout that married the text and images together. The different parts of the illustration are overlapping and interlinked to show the continuing events added online by the magazine.

The clean, blue back ground complements the detailed sketches and made the text stand out.

Included in this advertising illustration brief was to create a flyer – fresh, bright and organic for a vegetarian takeaway in Birmingham, UK. They specialise in fresh fruit smoothes and organic soups made from locally sourced produce.

Using watercolours, thick paper and pen and ink. Drawing the fruit from life to capture the true textures and colours. Leaving areas without colour to highlight the drawing and to give the marks made space. The unique marks I make I feel partner perfectly with a natural theme, this is due to my passion for nature and constant need to capture it.

The colourful background and text was added in Photoshop, linking each element of the design with the organic, natural aims of the company.

Although I produced many possible examples for the company, they choose this design due to it’s strong use of fresh colours, it is eye catching and shows the viewer straight away what the company are about. A whole advertising package could now be produced using elements from this design to run menu designs, restaurant signs, packaging.
