Riot Illustration

This editorial illustration was intended for a riot article for a newspaper – the colours could be changed to black and white.

My aim was to capture the violent energy, using vigorous, sharp ink marks for details of the figures and shaped colours paper as a base to give a solid element to the figures. Splashes of ink show the effect the riots give on the environment around them. Lots of space it let in the illustration to perhaps let the viewers imagine sections.

I really enjoy the fluidness of this illustration and fact I looked at my material very quickly and also created the marks very quickly. Not thinking so much about perfect figures visually but thinking about the movements the figures were making and trying to capture their energy.
